German Studies LSA+ Berlin

The Department of German Studies  offers a Language Study Abroad program in Berlin, Germany. Students take courses with the Dartmouth faculty director and local faculty members and have access to several facilities at the Freie Universität Berlin. The academic program, conducted entirely in German, stresses in-depth exploration of contemporary culture on site and is complemented by exciting speaker visits, performances and concerts, excursions to historical sites, and short trips to other parts of Germany.

Berlin maintains a singular position as Germany's capital, as a mediator between East and West, a multicultural and multilingual hub for the arts and creativity, and a city that has a lot to offer to young people. Every summer, it sets the stage for a rich program of music and arts festivals. Few cities in the world can rival Berlin's current political and economic role, the swings of its history, the ethnic and cultural diversity of its population, or the richness of its traditional as well as cutting-edge offerings in art, theater, music, and film. The New York Times has called Berlin "the most exciting city in Europe," but it is also a comfortable, livable place of distinctive neighborhoods, food and language, landscapes, parks, and lakes, all connected by a convenient system of public transportation.

The summer LSA+ will run in conjunction with the German LSA and the fall LSA+ will run in conjunction with the German FSP as a track of Germany on the World Stage.

Generally, 16 or more students can be selected for the combined summer German LSA/LSA+ and the fall German FSP/LSA+ program.

Students live in a homestay for the full duration of the program. The homestay living arrangement is an integral and required component of this program. The homestay experience often offers several benefits, including improved language skills (especially in foreign language environments), deep cultural insights, integration into the local community, the opportunity to experience daily life like a local, and the chance to build meaningful relationships.

Budget Sheet for German Studies LSA+ Berlin

The fees charged by the College for a Dartmouth-sponsored off-campus term of study include regular tuition charges for a term at Dartmouth, service fees, as well as the specific costs established for each off-campus study locale. In many programs, the room and board costs tend to be higher than for a term in Hanover. You can view a budget sheet for each program by clicking on the appropriate term. The cost of transportation to and from the site is the responsibility of the student.
