PLEASE NOTE that applications cannot be transferred from one term to another. Acceptance into one program does not automatically guarantee your acceptance in another program term.
Before Deciding to Withdraw
Before submitting your withdrawal, we highly recommend speaking with at least one of the following:
- your program's faculty director or exchange manager
- your undergraduate dean/advisor
- a staff member at the Guarini Institute
- a study away mentor
For questions about withdrawing, please contact the Guarini Institute at guarini.institute@dartmouth.edu or call 603-646-1202.
Guarini Institute Withdrawal Policy:
Starting Summer Term 2026, the withdrawal policy outlined here will apply to ALL Dartmouth undergraduate students who commit to a Guarini Institute study away program.
The late withdrawal fees policy has been updated to better align with the amount of resources that the Guarini Institute commits well in advance of program start dates. The Institute can incur withdrawal fees of $12,000 or more for students who withdraw late from programs.
Students are encouraged to carefully consider enrollment decisions and commit to programs they are serious about attending. The study away program admissions process can be highly competitive and saying 'yes' to some students often means saying 'no' to others. Thus, withdrawing late from a program is strongly discouraged and if you need to do so, you should submit requests as far in advance as possible to enable other students the opportunity to participate in programs.
Withdrawal fees will be charged according to the timeline for late withdrawals below. The dates are consistent for all programs in that term.
| Fee Amount | Summer Programs | Fall & Fall+ Programs | Winter Programs | Spring Programs |
Withdrawal Deadline | $0 | April 1 | June 1 | October 1 | January 1 |
First Withdrawal Fee | $1,000 | April 2 | June 2 | October 2 | January 2 |
Second Withdrawal Fee | $2,000 | May 1 | July 1 | November 1 | February 1 |
Third Withdrawal Fee | $3,000 | June 1 | August 1 | December 1 | March 1 |
Withdrawal Fee Payments
Withdrawal fees will be charged to the student's account at the time of the withdrawal. Financial Aid will NOT cover withdrawal fees.
Unpaid withdrawal fees may result in a Dartmouth College registration hold. Students who have been placed on hold will not be able to register for courses nor access College services and facilities until their financial obligations or compliance with rules and regulations have been fulfilled.
Procedure for Withdrawing
Students must submit the Guarini Institute: Withdrawal Request Form located in the 'Requirements' tab of your application.
- Before submitting "Yes, please withdraw my application from this program" we highly recommend speaking with your program's Faculty Director/Exchange Manager, the staff at the Guarini Institute, and/or your Undergraduate Dean. Withdrawals are final and cannot be reversed.
- You will not be withdrawn from the program until your status changes from "Committed" to "Withdrawn." You will receive a status notification from the Guarini Institute once the withdrawal is complete.
- Once the Guarini Institute receives the completed form from a committed student, a staff member will notify the student, the Registrar, the student's Dean, and the Faculty Director/Exchange Manager to formally withdraw them from the program.
- Committed students can withdraw from a program without penalty if the Guarini Institute: Withdrawal Request Form is submitted before the withdrawal deadline, see below. Forms submitted after the term's withdrawal deadline listed below, committed students will be charged a late withdrawal fee in accordance with the table above.
To withdraw without financial penalty, students must withdraw by the following term deadlines. Withdrawing after these deadlines will incur a fee, following the structure indicated in the table above:
- (X) Summer Programs: April 1 at 11:59 pm EST
- (F/F+) Fall & Fall Term+ Programs: June 1 at 11:59 pm EST
- (W) Winter Programs: October 1 at 11:59 pm EST
- (S) Spring Programs: January 1 at 11:59 pm EST
