Scholarships & Funding Opportunities

Dartmouth makes a significant effort to ensure that off-campus programs are financially accessible to all students.  That said, there are a variety of funding opportunities that you may wish to explore in order to assist with funding plane tickets, everyday expenses, or travel that isn't included as part of the academic program.  Below are just a handful of national study abroad scholarships.  There is a multitude of other scholarships for study abroad that you can uncover by a simple internet search. 

 

National Scholarships

Boren Scholarships

An initiative of the National Security Education Program, the Boren Scholarship is awarded preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.  For assistance with your application contact Fellowship Advising.

 

The Fund for Education Abroad 

The Fund for Education Abroad provides scholarships to students who are underrepresented among the US study-abroad population.

 

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia)

Freeman-ASIA is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need and who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

 

Gilman Scholarship Program

The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.  Awards range from $3,000-$8,000.  For assistance with your application contact Fellowship Advising.

 

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State's Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship enables eligible students to develop career and leadership skills and a global perspective to pursue a career in public service and contribute to preserving the principles of democracy.
