The Department of German Studies offers a combined Advanced Language Study Abroad and Foreign Study Program (LSA+/FSP) in Berlin, Germany. Students take courses with the Dartmouth faculty director and local faculty members and have access to several facilities at the Freie Universität Berlin. The academic program, conducted entirely in German, stresses an in-depth exploration of contemporary culture on site, especially theater, memory culture, and central social issues in today's Germany. There are frequent excursions to historical sites and typically an extended trip to Vienna, Austria.
Berlin maintains a singular position as Germany's capital, as a mediator between East and West, and as a multicultural and multilingual hub of the arts and creativity. While it is also the site of the German LSA/LSA+, this advanced program enables students to experience it in new and significantly different ways and improve their German significantly. Few cities in the world can rival Berlin's current political and economic role, the swings of its history, the ethnic and cultural diversity of its population, or the richness of its traditional as well as cutting-edge offerings in art, theater, music, and film. The New York Times has called Berlin "the most exciting city in Europe," but it is also a comfortable, livable place of distinctive neighborhoods, food and language landscapes, parks, and lakes, all connected by a convenient system of public transportation.

A Cultural Studies Approach to Contemporary Germany and Berlin
Two German language courses above German 5 with an average grade of B or better. Examples of courses include German 6 and German 10.XX. We will consider German 13-16 and 42-47, which are taught in English. If approved, only one such course may count toward the two prerequisites.
Or satisfactory completion of the German LSA or LSA+ during the summer term immediately preceding the foreign study term.
Students live in a homestay for the full duration of the program. The homestay living arrangement is an integral and required component of this program. The homestay experience often offers several benefits, including improved language skills (especially in foreign language environments), deep cultural insights, integration into the local community, the opportunity to experience daily life like a local, and the chance to build meaningful relationships.

The fees charged by the College for a Dartmouth-sponsored off-campus term of study include regular tuition charges for a term at Dartmouth, service fees, as well as the specific costs established for each off-campus study locale. In many programs, the room and board costs tend to be higher than for a term in Hanover. You can view a budget sheet for each program by clicking on the appropriate term under "Financing Your Program". The cost of transportation to and from the site is the responsibility of the student.
In order that all qualified Dartmouth undergraduate students may have the opportunity to take part in off-campus programs, the College endeavors to adjust its normal financial aid awards for students already receiving aid. Tuition and expected family contribution for Dartmouth's off-campus programs are the same as for an on-campus term.
Students are responsible for purchasing their own plane tickets and, in many cases, meals. Often, families find that they owe less for billable items for study away terms but will instead use more of their expected family contribution towards indirect costs such as the flight and meals. For help sorting out who pays what and how, contacting the Financial Aid office is often advisable.
